The Icebreaker Polarstern

The Polarstern is one of the world’s premier research icebreakers. In service since 1982, it serves the German polar research community and is the flagship of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven. The Polarstern was home for 100 people from around the world. They are researchers, logisticians, polar bear guards, captains, engineers, doctors, chefs, and navigators. They live, sleep, and eat here, and conduct research. The Polarstern is their workplace, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and various laboratories.
